The census survey of 2001 found that
the city's 40.38 percent population
lived in slums. The latest City Sanitation
Plan (CSP)3 reported 564 slums in the
city with an estimated population of
11.89 lakh. Out of this, 64 percent are
notified and 36 percent are undeclared

High Access of Water but Quality
Concerns
The CSP says that 94.19 percent of total
households in Pune city are served
through water connections (see Figure
1). This means 6 percent of the city
population does not have access to a
water connection. The City Development
population is much higher than the
city's overall population growth rate. In
2001, the annual population growth
rate of the city was 4.14 percent
whereas it was 6.06 percent for the
slum population. Population density in
the slums is six times more that in non-
slum areas of the city.

Households (HHs)
Plan (CDP) gives details of the access to
drinking water. According to it, 58
percent households of the notified slums
have individual water supply
connections. The rest depend on public
stand posts or community taps. Though
the household water connections in the
city is high still diarrhoea ranks third in
the city among the major cause of
hospitalisation6.
