Foreword
Population Foundation of India(PFI),established in the year 1970,has now entered in to the 40th year of its
existence. Since its inception ,PFI has dedicated itself to the cause of human welfare through Family Planning,
Reproductive and Child Health(RCH) services and other population programmes within a wider canvas of
population stabilization and sustainable development.
PFI’s efforts in the 40th year, is to undertake intensive advocacy efforts to promote rights-based and
gender-sensitive strategies to achieve population stabilization. A series of events and activities including
three Regional Conferences followed by a National Conference have been planned to commemorate the 40th
year. The aim of Regional Conferences is to bring out region specific priorities and issues and recommend
strategies which will be disseminated in the National Conference. The first Regional Conference on “Health,
Population, and Social Development Issues of Eastern States--Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and
West Bengal” has been organized in Bhubaneswar in February,2010.
The second Regional(Western) Conference on “Health, Population, and Social Development Issues
of Western States--Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan” is being held in Pune, with the objectives
of getting a clear perspective on the demographic transition process in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Rajasthan,
to draw attention to the reproductive health issues, effective strategies to address them and to recapitulate
initiatives by the State Governments and civil society on population and health issues. With these objectives
in view , the document “Population, Health and Social Development in Gujarat, Maharashtra and
Rajasthan”, has been prepared. The document contains state and district profiles with data on population,
health and selected social development issues of the three states.
This publication is an endeavour to present information to policy makers, planners, programme managers,
NGOs, academicians and researchers. We hope this publication will be useful in meeting this intended
purpose.
